Wells Fargo boosts profits, ATMs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Wells Fargo has announced record profits for the 1st quarter of 2013. The bank is also boosting its ATMs.

"This ATM knows your habits and your features and what you do here," says Wells Fargo Area President Leigha Smith. She introduced us today to the bank's high tech new ATMs. She says they're more like a personal assistant than the old money machine we're used to.

"This get-to-know you better ATM really knows our customers," she says. "They get cash, that's the first thing that comes up. If they typically deposit checks or cash that's the first item that comes up, deposit cash."

Sometimes personal greetings even come up.

"That was a little shocking to me," says Wells customer Joe Marshall. "On my birthday, it said ‘Happy Birthday.' And it started the week of my birthday, and I was like how do they know that? But it showed up and I appreciate that."

Officers learning advance police driving

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- When you think of the job police officers do, you probably imagine the dangers come from people attacking or shooting them. Experts say one of the most hazardous things an officer does every day is driving.

"They're surrounded by distractions in the car just by nature of the job" says Bryan Leaird, of the League of Municipalities. "They're constantly having to look other places while they're driving."

Experts say high speed emergency responses are not the main causes of crashes. They say every day driving is the biggest culprit.

So police are doing something about it.

The city of Charlotte and the League of Municipalities teamed up for the first law enforcement driver training.

Seventeen departments from across the state sent their instructors to learn how to teach advanced police driving.

“Law enforcement’s presence on our roads is imperative to reminding motorists to obey speed limits, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to keeping our roads safe,” said Becky Wallace, director of GHSP.

Gun sales leveling off, but still high

Gun sales leveling off, but still high

LENOIR, NC (WBTV)- A steady stream of customers continued to come in the Guns Too store in Lenoir on Wednesday, evidence that the demand for guns has still not gone away.

Owner Joel Snyder, though, says he is starting to see things quiet down, sort of.

"The hysteria seems to have calmed somewhat," he said.

Gun sales have been the best they've ever had in recent months at the shop but with talk in Washington now focusing on background checks and not the weapons themselves, many buyers don't feel the urgency to make a purchase these days.

"I don't think they are going to ban any guns," said one man as he completed his purchase of a handgun.

Even the so called "assault rifles" are not included in the legislation as many thought they would shortly after the Newtown shootings last year.

The shop in Lenoir had three for sale on Wednesday.
