Thousands of students in the Charlotte region heading back to school

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Thousands of students in 20 counties throughout the Charlotte region returned back to class Thursday morning.

With more buses on the road this morning, there were minor traffic congestion issues reported in Charlotte, but there were no major accidents.

In the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district alone, more than 138,000 students are returning back to class today.

Some of the middle schools have new start times, and all of the elementary schools have an additional 45 minutes added to the school day this year.

The main reason for the change in bell schedules is to allow buses to do a higher number of routes than last school year. The district says the changes will actually save the district around $4 million.

The time shift will be especially noticed by students and parents at magnet schools like Myers Park Traditional School in south Charlotte.
