CPCC launches new diploma program

Responding to the requests of Mecklenburg County ophthalmologist groups and practices, Central Piedmont Community College will open a new diploma program to train ophthalmic medical assistants in August 2013. Kathleen Rodgers, formerly of Horizon Eye Care in Charlotte, will serve as program chair and instructor.

The one-year program will prepare students for positions in ophthalmologist and optometrist offices. Upon completion of the program, students will take the national Certified Ophthalmic Assistant exam. CPCC’s program will be only the third ophthalmic medical assistant program offered by a North Carolina community college.

Officials say that given the Charlotte region’s aging population, eye physicians have a growing need for ophthalmic assistants. According to U.S. Dept. of Labor information, ophthalmic medical assistant is of the 30-most rapidly growing occupations in the nation.

100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte hold 1st Movement of Youth Robotics Competition

The mentees of the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte, a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of African American youth, will present “Senior Solutions” in their first robotics competition at the Urban League, located at 740 W. 5th Street, on Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m.

Following the international FIRST LEGO League program’s 2012 guidelines, “Senior Solutions” involves consulting with senior citizens and developing an innovative robotic solution to make their life easier.

Teams of mentees will prepare technological and marketing presentations.

AG announces student contest to fight prescription drug abuse

North Carolina high school students can help fight prescription drug abuse and overdose deaths by entering a video contest sponsored by Attorney General Roy Cooper and the NC Department of Justice.

To educate young people about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, Cooper is partnering with the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators, the North Carolina Parent Resource Center, and the Governor’s Institute on Substance Abuse to sponsor a student video competition.

Cooper is asking students to create public service announcement videos on the topic of teen prescription drug abuse. All students enrolled in grades nine through 12 in North Carolina are eligible to enter.

Classroom app creates pitch perfect music

Gone are the days when Orchestra Director Bill Myers needs a tape recorder to listen to a student’s pitch. In his classes at Hough High School, Myers uses a new form of technology – the SmartMusic App which changes the way students practice and learn their instruments.

The interactive tool allows students to play along with the music onscreen and provides immediate feedback on their performance. Myers uses the app to grade 50 percent of the student’s assignment while his trained ear provides the other half.

The House of Education Committee is working to pass House Bill 127 that students have arts education credit for graduation beginning with the freshmen class of 2016.

CMS relaunches television station

Starting in February, CMS staff, students, parents and the Charlotte community can tune in to CMS TV and see new programming.

The relaunch of the district’s television station aims to help CMS keep the public informed and provide work-based learning opportunities for students,.

“The relaunch of CMS TV is part of our ongoing commitment to better engage our employees and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community in the conversation about CMS and its future,” said Superintendent Heath Morrison. “Everywhere I go, I meet people who care deeply about CMS, and it’s important that we keep them informed about matters affecting our schools. Our television station will help us do that.”

Proposed bill would allow for armed volunteers at NC schools

There is a new push underway in North Carolina that could allow some school workers to carry a gun on school grounds.

The proposed bill was one of 15 bills introduced to the state Senate on Thursday by Republican Senator Stan Bingham from Davidson County.

According to the proposal Senate Bill 27, certain teachers and other volunteers could be designated as "school safety marshals" and be allowed to carry firearms in emergency situations.

They would be able to have a gun on school grounds, bus, athletic property or any property used by the school board or board of trustees.

These marshals would provide armed security at schools that do not have a school resource officer.

Right now, only law enforcement officers are allowed to have guns on school grounds in North Carolina.

The bill, if passed, would call for the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to come up with a training regime for volunteers.

DeMayo law offices awarding $37,500 in scholarships to graduating seniors

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -- The clock is ticking for local high school seniors to have a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship toward their college education through the 11th annual Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship Program.

The firm will be awarding $37,500 in college scholarships to 15 high school seniors who reside and attend schools in counties served by the firm, including: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, Union, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Lincoln, Rowan, Caldwell, Stanly, Iredell, Alexander, Burke, Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Anson, Cumberland, York, Lancaster, Chesterfield, Marlboro and Dillon. The deadline for applications is February 25, 2013.
