Storm system brings rough winter weather, drought relief to Carolinas

Storm system brings rough winter weather, drought relief to Carolinas

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A strong storm system that brought blizzard conditions to the North, heavy rain across the Carolinas and tornadoes in the Southeast brought another round of snow to the North Carolina mountains on Wednesday night.

However, it also brought strong, gusty winds that took down trees and power lines, causing outages to hundreds and dangerous conditions on the roadways.

A High Wind Warning remained in effect through Thursday morning, as wind gusts of over 70 mph persisted through the first half of the day.

Below freezing temperatures caused ice on the roadways and blowing snow reduced visibility.

The system also triggered an EF-1 tornado in Cartaret county North of Beaufort.  The National Weather Service estimates the tornado produced wind speeds of 90 mph.

Ashley Batey: Severe weather possible on Wednesday

Ashley Batey: Severe weather possible on Wednesday

CHARLOTTE - WBTV Meteorologist Ashley Batey is tracking s storm system that could possibly bring severe weather to the Carolinas on Wednesday.

A strong upper-level storm system located just east of the Rocky Mountains will move eastward, bringing a significant threat of severe weather from Texas to Florida.

That same system will then move Northeast toward the Carolinas.

If you have travel plans that include the Gulf states, especially Louisiana or Southern Mississippi or Alabama, be vigilant.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK has put these areas under a "Moderate Risk" category for severe weather, something not usually seen in December.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A strong storm system is bringing blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes region, and the Carolinas will feel the impacts from this system as well.

After some much needed rain moved through the area, the winds began to pick up overnight Thursday.  The potential for damaging winds will be even higher Friday afternoon, as wind gusts approach 70 mph in the high country, where a High Wind Warning has been issued.

Strong winds from the same system tore down trees and overturned power poles in Green county, Tennessee.  Several homes were also damaged.

Another potential travel hazard will be snow falling in the mountains.  One to three inches is forecast through Saturday morning that could cause slick roadways.

The Piedmont will also see strong winds, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible in the late afternoon hours.
