Localized flooding leads to schools closings early as wet weather continues to hamper area

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Several clusters of storms will bring heavy rain and windy conditions across the region Tuesday.

WBTV Meteorologist Kelly Franson says that after heavy rain earlier this morning across the Charlotte metro region, another cluster of storms will move through around noon.

"Localized flooding is a very real possibility and severe weather could be a threat as well," Franson said, as we move into the evening hours.

The storms should clear out late in the night as a cold front moves into the area that will bring lots of sunshine late in the week.

Highs Tuesday are forecast around 79 degrees with winds blowing between 15 and 18 miles per hour, gusting to 32 mph.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Flash Flood Watch for 6 p.m. for Watauga County.

A Flood Advisory is in effect for Burke County until 3 p.m.

Despite rainy days, Charlotte still lags in rainfall

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Technically, Charlotte is below in rainfall for the year to the tune of 4 inches.

How can that be ?  Didn't we have flooding downpours this month ?  Didn't part of the roof at SouthPark mall collapse under the weight of a 4 inch drenching in late July ?  Isn't it more green here than brown, typically the predominant color of our vegetation in late August ?  And, unlike much of the nation, no part of North Carolina is really enduring any serious drought.  See the image.

All of the above are true.

So then, how can Charlotte be 4 inches in the hole?

Soggy week in store for Carolinas

Soggy week in store for Carolinas

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A sweeping cold front is bringing much cooler temperatures across the country and several days of rain for the Charlotte region.

WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin says heavy downpours are expected anytime after 3 p.m. Monday. Conklin says new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch of rainfall.

Highs are expected to be in the uppers 80s Monday with high humidity. The chances of rain are above 50 percent through most of the week, Conklin said.

The Charlotte area is already down a half inch of rain for the month of August with 0.21 inches of rainfall recorded.

Since Jan. 1, the area has seen 20.27 inches of rainfall, 4.84 inches below average.

Conklin says the biggest threat from the downpours this week is localized flooding.

Carolinas drying out, heating up this weekend

Carolinas drying out, heating up this weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The story for the last several days has been cooler temperatures with stormy afternoons, but this weekend we're rereading another chapter in the Carolinas: the heat.

As a warm front pushes North today, it will bring another round of storms to the forecast.  With slightly warmer temperatures and a bit more sun this afternoon, an isolated strong storm will be possible, but with numerous storms over the past few days, the atmosphere is pretty worked over.  Storms will have a difficult time strengthening significantly.

As the front moves out tomorrow, more sunshine will return to the area, heating up the lower atmosphere and sending temperatures near 90 degrees.  The warming trend will not stop here, however, and heat indices could be in the upper 90s late next week.

Another soggy day in store for region, flooding possible in some areas

Another soggy day in store for region, flooding possible in some areas

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- More heavy downpours are on tap for the Charlotte region Wednesday.

WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin says muggy conditions will fuel more storms with heavy downpours creating the potential for flash flooding in local areas.

Wednesday's high temperature will top out around 82 and drop back down to around 70 overnight.

The area has seen just over a half-inch of rainfall this month. But, Conklin says, the rainfall deficit for the year is still over 5 inches.

Conklin said this pattern of heavy rainfall in the afternoon and evening hours will linger through the end of the week.

Triple digit heat wave returns this weekend

Triple digit heat wave returns this weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- After a brief lull from the record-breaking temperatures, highs are forecast to climb into the triple digits again this weekend.

High pressure now over the Midwest once again builds into the upper levels of the atmosphere over the Carolinas, resulting in another round of 100 degree temperatures across the Piedmont. With the humidity factored into the equation, it will feel more like 105 to 108 in the afternoon.

Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and if you do have to be outdoors, make sure you're taking frequent breaks to cool down.  Also, don't forget about pets.  They should have access to fresh water and shade at all times.

There is some good news, though.  This round of heat won't be around long before a cold front moves in and significantly drops our temperatures next week.
